Alberto Garcia-Alix (NSFW)

“Photography has something infernal about it: there’s no coming back.”

Alberto Garcia-Alix is a Spanish photographer who seems to have led the Movida Madrileña, bringing to light powerful images of this cultural movement. With him were some of the most influential personalities in this field: Pedro Almodovar, Rossy de Palma and many others.

He’s well known mostly by his rawness in the black and white portraits, often naked, in underground world’s situations. From injecting heroin to prostituting, his works are often violently shameless with an incredible graphic power. It’s life as it is, without any pinkness to make it softer.

As he said: “The soul of photography is the encounter.”

Having his Leica and Hasselblad as lovers, Garcia-Alix shares his passion of photography with motorcycles, tattoos, music and night itself. Another night: in which living can be as raw as his imagery. And he takes us to the insides of it. With him.

Garcia-Alix has been brutally honest in his life and imagery. I saw few years ago his terrific exhibition at Museo Reina Sofia, and there were not many exhibitions which made such impact on me as his did. The rawness of the photographs was as real as life itself. His life, his environment. His photographs are what they are and make us feel there living the same moment as he was.
